Welcome, Ben Gazzara

I have come for, and left with, Ben Gazzara -- a prolific actor who seems -- sadly -- to now be known best for his role in The Big Lebowski (and possibly Roadhouse?).

Gazzara has been around for a long, long time, and subtly worked his way into your American consciousness -- all without ever becoming a big, big star.

His turn as the tough, violent soldier in Anatomy of a Murder was just right, for example.

For the first part of eternity, I will be having Ben room with David Janssen. I considered putting him in with John Cassavetes, but that room would get pretty braggy. . . .

A fine actor indeed. I have him with a Katie Award nomination today for his supporting work in Anatomy of a Murder and foresee nominations for, at the very least, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Saint Jack.

Criminally under-celebrated.

I'll always remember Ben Gazzara for one of my fave TV shows growing up, "Run for Your Life". At the start he finds out he's got a terminal something disease. Doc asks him what he plans to do. Ben: Guess I'll try to squeeze thirty years of living in to one... or two." Cue music and this cool Utah Salt Flats view from a speeding race car.

Turns out he only lived a year. Then the network canned him.

Still one of my faves, right up there with Michael Parks in "Then Came Bronson".
