A Recommended Essay for the Middle-Aged

I can't remember reading a more thoughtful, but fun and funny, essay on

this way-station

of life.

Tim Kreider's piece for the New York Times, entitled The Referendum, is my current favourite.

As he demonstrates, at least to me, each reader of this blog is an idiot, and a genius.

I just hope that you're all happy.

Enjoyed this very much -- not that I can relate to anything in it whatsoever, of course. As one of his readers commented, being female from the perspective the author describes adds an extra dimension of tension to it . . . :) Will have to check out more of Mr. Kreider's work -- thanks for posting, Mister Muleboy.

Just wanted to second Lupner's thanks for posting this -- one of the most insightful things i've read in a long time.

Kreider's cartoon is pretty great too -- the way he rolls you through the thought balloons clockwise until you get to the demonic baby as a visual punch line :-)
