Thums Up for Local Hero

Yeah, I know: it was released in the US in early 1983.

It's not really "news."

Well fuck you; this isn't a newspaper, it's a blog.

And I wanna go balls out in recommending Local Hero, Bill Forsyth's touching, funny, weird movie.

Peter Capaldi's Oldsen makes me laugh, Denis Lawson and Jennifer Black's Urquharts move me [that's a real love story], and Jenny Seagrove's Marina arouses me.

Peter Reigert and Burt Lancaster leave me discomfited, but I digress.

If you haven't seen it in the last year, see it. If you've never seen it, leave work or school, go home, and find a way to see it today.

This movie was rec'd to me by Sallitt, and I always meant to see. Now it is a must on the list.

Plus, you have forced me to look up "discomfited," a word I could never really wrap my mind around.

Main Entry: 1dis·com·fit
Pronunciation: \dis-ˈkəm(p)-fət, especially Southern ˌdis-kəm-ˈfit\
Function: transitive verb
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French descumfit, past participle of descumfire, from des- dis- + cumfire to prepare — more at comfit
Date: 13th century
1 a archaic : to defeat in battle b : to frustrate the plans of : thwart
2 : to put into a state of perplexity and embarrassment : disconcert

synonyms see embarrass

— dis·com·fit·ing·ly \dis-ˈkəm(p)-fə-tiŋ-lē, ˌdīs-kəm-ˈfi-\ adverb

One of my favorite lines was when Peter Reigert says to Burt Lancaster:

"Marlene! Don't tell me you're gonna pork Marlene Desmond!"

Have you seen Gregory's Girl?

An incredible movie, but I haven't seen it in the last year so I added it to my queue. I'm sure watching it again will not be disappointing.
