You were a TOMATO ! ! ! !

RIP Sidney Pollack

I was very sad to read of the death of Sydney Pollack, who is hailed as a director and producer of films, but whom I will miss for his entertaining and occasionally-compelling screen performances. He also was a highly-regarded acting teacher, and I suspect that was his true calling.

He studied under Sandy Meisner. I regard Meisner as the seminal American acting teacher of the twentieth century. As you may know, I never studied under Strasberg or Uta Hagen, but I did successfully avoid studying under Meisner too. Chickenshit that I am.

Wow, Sidney Pollack reached me in a much, much different way than he apparently reached you.

His acting turns were "entertaining" but only "occasionally" compelling?

And, you'll miss those acting roles more than his directing?

And, you suspect it's neither his acting or directing but his teaching of actors that was his true calling? Should this be read as a backhanded compliment, damning with faint praise?

Why do you hate Sidney Pollack? Why do you hate America?

Well, under your withering, uncompromising gaze, I have reconsidered my snap opinion and find that

it remains unchanged.

I see two film,s directed by him that I think are marginally good [Condor and Shoot Horses, while I see about three compelling film performances , chiefly Husbands and Wives.
