like him or not,
won't you concede that

Ralph Bellamy
couldn't act . . .

Nobody ever played the Ralph Bellamy character -- i.e., the guy the girl is NOT going to end up with -- better than Ralph Bellamy. He was such an amiable, clueless buffoon that he didn't know Cary Grant had snookered him even after it had happened. Thus, you never had to feel bad for him (ala Bill Pullman in Sleepless in Seattle) and you never had to think he was the better man (ala Pierce Brosnan in Mrs. Doubtfire). And yet he was damn funny in the role and worth watching in his own right when he was on screen. I refer you to The Awful Truth (for which he received an Oscar nomination) and His Girl Friday where he was even better.

Which is not to say he could play Hamlet on Broadway or even the Maytag Repairman on TV. But I suspect that Marlon Brando on his best day couldn't have played the Ralph Bellamy character better than Ralph Bellamy. Within his exceedingly tiny niche, no one was ever better.

In the "ahh=Pay=Ahh=Tau trade, I might be accused of offering up a softball -- a technically accurate statement intended to elicit a home run from the respondent.

Not that I'd ever admit it.
